LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 2, 2020) 鈥� The 海角禁区 celebrated the LGBTQ* community this fall during its first annual Pride Week, made possible through a collaboration among the college鈥檚 Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, its newly established LGBTQ* Advisory Committee, and the 海角禁区 medPRIDE student organization.

The 海角禁区 College of Medicine hosted four days of events that gathered feedback, shared important local resources, and displayed the college鈥檚 commitment to continued progress toward inclusivity.

LEXINGTON, KY. (Oct. 27, 2020) 鈥� A $2.9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is supporting a multidisciplinary team of University of Kentucky researchers in continuing their work to find therapeutic strategies to resolve neurovascular inflammation and repair blood-brain barrier dysfunction in epilepsy.

A new study led by researchers at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center and 海角禁区 Department of Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences demonstrates the potential benefit of using an anti-leukemic drug nilotinib 鈥� most commonly used to treat chronic myelogenous leukemia 鈥� to overcome therapy resistance in metastatic melanoma.

Each year at the Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center 鈥� Diabetes and Obesity Research Day, researchers from the University of Kentucky and other regional institutes share their current findings and ongoing research about the alarming rise in obesity and diabetes rates. Presenters also discuss prevention and treatment of these epidemic-level diseases.

The Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Center (SCoBIRC), in collaboration with the University of Kentucky College of Arts and Sciences, has selected five undergraduate students for the inaugural African American Research Training Scholars (AARTS) program.

When students at the University of Kentucky were sent home last spring as a precaution early in the COVID-19 pandemic, Fareesh Hobbs Kanga, MD, faced a pair of significant challenges.

A new 海角禁区 study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology finds that tattooed skin does not sweat as much as non-inked areas of the body, which may have implications for the body鈥檚 ability to cool in people with extensive tattooing.

A research abstract from Jacob Hubbuch, a third-year student from the 海角禁区, was awarded first place in the Education, Innovation, and Outcomes category of the American College of Surgeons鈥� (ACS) Medical Student Research Program. The research was among three top finishers featured at the ACS 2020 Virtual Clinical Congress on Oct. 3.

Matthew Bush, MD, PhD, MBA, is an experienced clinician, academic leader, and researcher. While he has been directly involved in health care and academia throughout his career, he credits the progress of his research career to a program he completed at the 海角禁区 while serving as a faculty member.

The 海角禁区 Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, a world leader in Alzheimer's research and community outreach, will hold its 10th annual Markesbery Symposium. There will be a community session and scientific session, each held via Zoom.

After dedicating more than two years as interim chair of orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine, the 海角禁区 has officially named Jeffrey Selby, MD, chair of his department. Dr. Selby has been a devoted physician and educator since joining the University of Kentucky as a faculty member in 2002 after graduating from the 海角禁区 College of Medicine鈥檚 orthopaedic surgery residency program. LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 9, 2020) 鈥� Allan Butterfield, a professor of biological chemistry in the University of Kentucky College of Arts & Sciences, has been named among the world鈥檚 leading Alzheimer鈥檚 disease experts by Expertscape, an online base of biomedical expertise.

Henrietta Lacks鈥檚 鈥淗eLa鈥� cells continue to influence scientific discovery even after her death from cancer in 1951. These cells have been used to study cancer growth, learn more about viruses, and study drug effects on the body. They even helped develop the polio vaccine.

(Sept. 30 2020) 鈥� A recent publication in the Journal of Neuroscience by a group of researchers at the University of Kentucky looks at Encoding the Odor of Cigarette Smoke. Tim McClintock, a physiology professor in the 海角禁区 College of Medicine, says their work lays a foundation for two things.

The 海角禁区 College of Medicine鈥檚 Women in Medicine and Science (WIMS) will host its sixth annual Visiting Professor Program, also known as 鈥淲IMS Day,鈥� this fall as a virtual program. The event will serve as an opportunity for faculty, staff, and learners to network, develop their career skills, and learn about the strides women have made in medicine and science.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 23, 2020) 鈥� Recent work published by researchers at the University of Kentucky鈥檚 Sanders-Brown Center on Aging (SBCoA) highlights what the lead investigator calls the 鈥渃ornerstone鈥� of her lab. Maj-Linda Selenica, assistant professor at SBCoA, led the study recently published in BBA Molecular Basis of Disease.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 23, 2020) 鈥� A study led by researchers at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center highlighted differences in patient diagnosis and treatment in those with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) across the state of Kentucky. Recently published in PLOS One, the study used Kentucky Cancer Registry patient data from 2007-2011 to identify trends in epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation testing and the usage of the EGFR inhibitor, erlotinib. EGFR mutations are common in NSCLC.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 22, 2020) 鈥� The University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center has joined a consortium of 17 cancer centers around the country to better understand the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic as it relates to disrupted cancer prevention, detection and care.

Meredith Landorf, MD, recently began a leadership role as assistant dean for the 海角禁区-Northern Kentucky Campus. Through this position she will oversee and build upon the third- and fourth-year clerkships while promoting the regional campus鈥檚 mission of educating physicians in Kentucky for Kentucky. Dr. Landorf is also a practicing physician in Edgewood, Ky.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 17, 2020) 鈥� A new 海角禁区 study may provide answers for why so many COVID-19 patients experience thrombosis, or the formation of blood clots that obstruct blood flow through the circulatory system.
