Darlingtina K. Esiaka, PhD, CHET primary faculty member and º£½Ç½ûÇø ASCEND scholar, has been awarded a prestigious fellowship through the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program. This summer, she will travel to Nigeria to collaborate with the Research Center for Ageing Cognition and Psychological Health at Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

Esiaka’s research explores the social determinants of health and aging in Black communities. In Nigeria, she will use mobile, wearable EEG devices—an accessible alternative to expensive brain imaging tools—to detect early signs of cognitive decline.

The project includes cross-continental collaboration with º£½Ç½ûÇø’s Yang Jiang, PhD, and Nigerian scholar Valentine Ucheagwu, PhD, and will support hands-on EEG training for Nigerian students and researchers. Esiaka will also mentor º£½Ç½ûÇø medical student Maria F. Clark during the visit, reinforcing the program’s commitment to global academic partnerships and mentorship.
