Tyler Balfour is a first-year graduate student at the University of Kentucky enrolled in the Sport and Exercise Psychology Master’s program. He currently works as a graduate research assistant as a member of the Center for Health Equity Transformation (CHET) working as a part of the Appalachian Tobacco Regulatory Science Team (AppalTruST) and the Center for Rapid Surveillance of Tobacco (CRST). Through studying Sport and Exercise Psychology, Tyler hopes to combine his passions of understanding human behavior and esports to advance sport psychology literature.

Dr. Saber Feizy, PhD, is a Postdoctoral Scholar with the College of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and the Center for Health Equity Transformation (CHET). His research focuses on health economics and marketing, and aims to explore the links between policy initiatives, marketing strategies, and patterns of tobacco-related products use. His work underscores the pivotal role of policy and marketing in shaping a healthier and more equitable society.

Biography

Yolanda Jackson is fourth-year PhD student in the College of Communication and Information at the University of Kentucky pursuing a PhD in communication with a concentration in health communication. She recently joined the Center for Health Equity and Transformation (CHET) as a graduate research assistant. Her past work experiences include being a lecturer in the University of Kentucky Department of Dietetics and Human Nutrition and working in health care as a clinical dietitian. Yolanda earned a BS in dietetics and a MS in dietetic administration from the University of Kentucky. She is a registered dietitian and is licensed by the state of Kentucky. Yolanda’s research interest includes patient-provider interactions, health campaigns, and health message design. She has a passion for chronic disease management focusing on medical nutrition therapy interventions and sustainable lifestyle changes to optimize health. Through her research at CHET, Yolanda hopes to learn more about health equity and participate in community-based participatory research. She also hopes to gain experience in grant writing and the publication process. Yolanda hopes to contribute by bringing her nutrition and chronic disease management experience to bridge the gap in health equity.

Carleigh Litteral, BS, is a first-year PhD student in Experimental Psychology – Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Kentucky. She holds dual bachelor’s degrees in neuroscience and psychology from the University of Louisville. During her undergraduate years, Carleigh gained valuable experience working within a substance use disorder treatment center as a patient engagement specialist. Initially drawn to a medical career in psychiatry, her trajectory shifted after engaging in research across three diverse laboratories focusing on spinal cord injuries, bipolar disorder, and Sars-CoV-2. This exposure ignited her passion for research, leading her to redirect her career path towards academia. Driven by a desire to contribute to addiction neuroscience research, Carleigh aspires to make meaningful contributions towards understanding the mechanistic neurobiological and genetic underpinnings of addictive disorders. With a keen focus on discovering novel pharmacologic treatments and psychological preventative measures, she seeks to positively impact individuals grappling with addiction, inspired by her direct experiences working with patients at the treatment center. Carleigh's ultimate goal is to emerge as a principal investigator, leveraging her personal experience and expertise to advance the field and improve outcomes for those affected by addictive disorders.

Albert is a first-year doctoral student in communication at the College of Communication at the University of Kentucky. He holds an MA in Communication from the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication, Washington State University. Broadly, his research uses an interdisciplinary method to promote positive health behavior, well-being, and health disparities. He hopes joining CHET will offer the avenue to become a well-rounded researcher who utilizes community-engaged research to examine cancer risks and prevention, illness survivorship, and Alzheimer’s disease risks and prevention in underserved communities in the US and globally.

Biography

Michelle Roberts, MS, is a third-year PhD student in anthropology at the University of Kentucky. Michelle graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor of arts in anthropology and political science with a Spanish minor. She then graduated from Duke University with a master’s of science in global health. At Duke, she investigated the experiences of families with loved ones in intensive care after stroke or traumatic brain injury in Argentina, emphasizing the critical role family plays during and after an acute illness or injury. After graduation from Duke, Michelle worked as a research coordinator at the University of Washington, working first with people with PTSD, and then with people with multiple sclerosis. Michelle’s research experiences have underscored the importance of understanding health in the context of family, community, and health system. Through work with CHET, Michelle hopes to gain experience in community-based participatory research and partner with communities to solve health challenges. She is excited to engage critically in transdisciplinary research and shares CHET’s commitment to health equity and mentorship. In her future research, she hopes to study chronic disease, disability, and caregiving and address challenges experienced by individuals and their families managing chronic health issues within communities with high rates of disease or disparate access to care in the southeastern United States.

He has aggregated over eight years' professional experience across diverse sectors like academia, communication, non-profit project management, and development research. Here at º£½Ç½ûÇø, his research interests revolve around understanding communication audiences, practitioners, strategies, information, education, and motivation within the contexts of health outcomes. His own background as an international student from a developing country like Ghana continues to shape his acute awareness of and interest in health equity problems and populations that are simultaneously understudied and underserved. Some of his past and current projects focus on digital media and obesity, media coverage of Black women’s maternal health disparities, suicide behavior, online medical crowdfunding, and social norms about sports gambling/betting behavior among vulnerable populations. Fidelis hopes to feed off the rich interdisciplinary research culture at CHET to contribute to research and community work that support the mission and work of CHET.

Breyanna is an aspiring physician who currently works as a Markey STRONG Post-baccalaureate fellow within the Markey Cancer Center. Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, Breyanna attended the University of Kentucky where she earned her B.S. in Human Health Sciences in. As an undergraduate, she worked under Dr. Samuel Awuah where she focused on the chemical synthesis of cyclometalated Au (III) dithiocarbamate complexes while trying to understand their anticancer activity. Currently Breyanna works within Dr. Justin Moore’s research group focusing on how factors like race, sexual orientation, gender identity, and socioeconomic status on health outcomes, particularly in the context of cancer. With a specific interest in studying health disparities facing women and women of color.
