LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 2, 2022) — On Monday, May 25, the faculty and administration of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine announced the creation of the Saha Aortic Center, a new research center focused on aortic disease.

The University of Kentucky Office of Nationally Competitive Awards has announced that º£½Ç½ûÇø sophomore Isha Chauhan, from LaGrange, Kentucky, has been awarded a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship.

The Goldwater Scholarship is the preeminent undergraduate award of its kind in the fields of natural sciences, engineering and mathematics. Chauhan is among 417 students nationwide selected to receive the honor, from an estimated pool of over 5,000 students.

For many years, ventricular assist devices (VADs) were considered a last resort for patients with serious heart failure. These mechanical pumps, which help maintain blood circulation, were mainly used for patients awaiting a heart transplant.

Recent studies conducted by University of Kentucky researchers suggest VADs actually could be used to recover the hearts of patients with heart failure, even those with advanced heart failure, possibly preventing their need for transplants in the future.
