I鈥檓 pleased to announce starting this week, the College of Medicine will hold weekly administrators meetings with rotating topics, such as: accounting, finance, HR/payroll, research administration, and reporting.  We will communicate the agenda for the weekly meeting in advance, when possible.  While this meeting is geared toward Business Administrators, depending on the subject matter others may wish to attend.  Please check with your supervisor in advance regarding attendance to ensure coverage

University of Kentucky Sanders-Brown Center on Aging (SBCoA) is hosting its sixth annual Markesbery Symposium on Aging and Dementia on Nov. 4-5. This two-day program will offer sessions for both the scientific and community audiences. Clinicians and researchers from 海角禁区 and other institutions will come together to share current findings, trends and the latest updates on dementia and aging disorders, particularly as related to Alzheimer鈥檚 disease. Dr. Ginny Sprang, professor in the University of Kentucky Department of Psychiatry and executive director of 海角禁区鈥檚 Center on Trauma and Children (CTAC), has been awarded a $2 million grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. When Sprang began her research she focused on the field of traumatic stress, investigating event-specific factors that influenced how trauma manifested in people of all ages. Her experience as a psychotherapist working with violence exposed children began to shape the trauma research she conducted.

Individuals who inject drugs are at risk of endocarditis, a bacterial infection that enters the bloodstream and clusters on the valves of the heart. The infection requires prolonged antibiotic treatment and, in some cases, surgery. Without intervention, the infection can be fatal. In the past 10 years, the number of patients presenting to U.S. hospitals with endocarditis has doubled with the proliferation of prescription opioid and heroin addiction.

The University of Kentucky Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Alzheimer's Disease Center (ADC) has been awarded an $8.25 million, five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to continue and further research and clinical initiatives geared toward treating Alzheimer's disease. Currently, only 30 designated Alzheimer's Disease Centers exist in the U.S.

Certificate signatures known as electronic signatures are increasingly becoming an accepted method of signing documents. On the first of May, 2015, Angelique Bell waited in a hair salon, reading the weekend section of the newspaper. She noticed an ad for a health research study that needed participants who had risk factors for diabetes. Since she met the criteria and had some time to pass, she decided to call about the study right then, from the salon chair. It was her 45th birthday.

"I don't have diabetes, but I have a strong family history of diabetes and some of the risk factors, and I thought that the information from this study could be something that could benefit me in the future," said Bell.

NIH announced on August 1 that they are lengthening the window of time during which peer reviewers can submit their applications under the NIH Continuous Submission Policy.  Reviewers must have served six times in 18 months to be eligible.  Eligibility now begins on August 1 following the 18 months of service and continues through September 30 of the next year.

海角禁区 Professor Matthew Gentry will direct a team international scientists recently awarded a five-year, $8.5 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant to pursue a cure for Lafora鈥檚 disease. The International Epilepsy Cure Center based at the 海角禁区 College of Medicine鈥檚 Department of Molecular Medicine and Biochemistry represents a collaborative effort to advance translational research and improve the diagnosis and treatment of Lafora鈥檚 disease, with the ultimate goal of finding a cure.

The firm grip of opioid addiction on a person鈥檚 life necessitates sustainable therapeutic approaches proven effective through scientific trials and evidence.

In ivory towers all over the world, experts ponder the factors that foster career success and overall well-being in their college graduates. Gallup tried to answer the same question. In a 2014 poll of more than 30,000 graduates, the polling juggernaut tried to find connections between the college experience and long-term career and personal "wellness." In other words: did graduates feel they had achieved personal and career success?

In a commentary published in the July 22 issue of Science, Nathan Vanderford, assistant director for research at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center, describes his path to landing a nontraditional faculty position at 海角禁区. Science is one of the world鈥檚 most prestigious research journals. Many new doctorate recipients are unaware of their nontraditional career options and of the challenges they may face when pursuing them. Vanderford, who applied for dozens of non-research jobs after earning his doctorate, knows this all too well.
